This Roundtable will be an opportunity endowments and other investors to learn about how and why to consider environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors into their investment process in order to positively impact communities, locally and around the world.

Participants will include trustees, CIOs, CFOs, senior administrators, and endowment/foundation staff from colleges and universities, community foundations, and other investor groups, sustainable investment experts, investment managers and consultants, as well as other key stakeholders, such as student leaders.

The agenda will be designed to facilitate peer-to-peer learning, and result in pragmatic, actionable outcomes for participants to take back to their institutional roles. Topics will be informed by participant feedback before the event, and will include:

  • How and why endowments might pursue ESG investing strategies and the role of community investing in the context of IEN’s Roadmap for Intentionally Design Endowments
  • Risks from climate change to investments and communities, and opportunities to investing in climate solutions that support the “Just Transition” to a low-carbon economy
  • Examples of anchor institutions with community impact investing strategies and the role of Opportunity Zones

For higher education institutions, as anchor institutions in their communities, the conversation will explore a variety of community investment strategies to support more prosperous and thriving communities through endowment investing, with examples of community investment opportunities from various asset classes, including:

  • Fixed Income: Considering ESG and community impacts in corporate and municipal bonds and strategies for small business lending for positive impact
  • Cash: How CDFIs and banks can support positive social impacts for communities and the environment
  • Public Equities: Investing and engaging around the “S” in ESG
  • Private Equity and Venture Capital: Investing in start-ups and private companies that drive jobs, economic development, and climate and sustainability solutions
  • Pay for Success Bonds: How endowments and foundations might work together to provide different types of capital to support this innovative financing model for positive social and environmental impact
