Daren Smith, President and Chief Investment Officer, University of Toronto Asset Management Corporation (UTAM)
Daren joined UTAM in November 2008 and was appointed President and Chief Investment Officer in September 2016. Daren is responsible for all aspects of UTAM’s business. Prior to becoming President and Chief Investment Officer, Daren was the head of UTAM’s manager selection team (now the investment team), which is responsible for all investment-related manager selection and monitoring activities.
Before joining UTAM, Daren spent four years at Keel Capital, where he was a partner and senior member of the investment team that managed the assets of a Nova Scotia–based pension plan. Daren spent the early part of his career at Sun Life Financial and then Maritime Life, working in an actuarial capacity.
Daren sits on the board of the Canadian Coalition for Good Governance and is a member of its Public Policy Committee and vice-chair of its Environmental & Social Committee. He serves on the Salvation Army Canada & Bermuda Investment Advisory Committee and is a member of the 30% Club Canada.
Daren holds an honours undergraduate degree in Actuarial Science (B.Sc. Hons) from the University of Western Ontario, a Master’s degree in Statistics (M.Sc.) from the University of British Columbia and a Master’s degree in Economics (M.A.) from McMaster University. He is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA) and a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries (FCIA). Daren holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA) and Financial Risk Manager (FRM) designations.
