Expect Equity incubates under-represented public equity portfolio managers to enable them to build a three-year track record and develop relationships with institutional allocators. Our goal is to empower these portfolio managers to launch independent firms and funds at scale. Expect Equity starts one step earlier than a traditional fund. Managers are employees of Expect Equity and have not yet formed their own firm. We believe that the 1.4% of capital (according to the Knight Foundation) in the US currently allocated to firms owned by women and people of color has been stubbornly persistent for over a decade not because under-represented managers lack investment talent, not because they lack the desire and capacity to build funds and firms at scale, and not because they lack the ability to build firms with exceptional investment cultures, but because they are stuck in a vicious cycle of undercapitalization. Expect Equity's goal is to break that cycle in a manner that recognizes the on-the-ground challenges that those in the allocator community face, and that we hope will enable managers to overcome the barriers that have held back progress for so long.
