Dorien Nuñez, Co-Founder and Director of Research, The OMNIResearch Group, and Co-Founder of the ‘OMNI Wall Street Advantage’
Dorien has close to 40 years of experience in the Institutional Investment Management and Financial Services Industries. He began his career in IBM’s ‘NYC Banking Practice’, where he helped automate bank branches, customer service operations and international banks and transactions. His IBM experience sparked an interest and desire to assist Investment industry firms to streamline systems wherever possible. His efforts led him to obtain his MBA at his alma mater Harvard University, to deepen his expertise in the investment industry.
After Harvard Business School, he worked on automating the investment management process with firms including Zacks Investment Research, FactSet and others. He was involved in the earliest platforms of web-based investment research and decision-making. OMNIResearch was borne from his work in the fintech space giving him a broad knowledge of research, tools, information and contacts.
The OMNIResearch Grp (OMNI) is an institutional investment research and consulting practice. His firm has worked with “ELEVEN” to create platforms – one for “Emerging Managers” and one that offers Investors solutions including analytics, due diligence and more – Family Offices, Foundations and Endowments, wealth managers, bank and insurance company investment departments are the major focus of this effort. Through Dorien’s memberships and board activities with various Alumni groups, Harvard University and Harvard Business School Clubs of New York City, Washington DC, the Harvard Club of Louisiana and other foundations, endowments, executive leadership organizations and two Presidential Commissions, he has access to vast networks of decision makers.
For more than 30 years, institutional consultants, investment managers, federal, state and local elected officials around the country have drawn upon his expertise relating to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion efforts and initiatives, investment performance, performance measurement analytics, systems and tools. Nunez, Director of Research of OMNI, has created a series of research products including “WOKE” – focusing on the role DEI does/does not play in investments.
He has a monthly column in the “Emerging Manager Monthly” publication. After the market crash of 2008/2009, Nunez and his partner, along with NYSE member firms and the NYSE, created the "OMNI Buttonwood Investment Education Institute". Nunez is a frequent speaker and Chair/Co-Chair for a variety of investment conferences including IMI (Invstmt Mgmt Inst), ABFE, HBSAAA “Access to Capital”, IMN (a division of Institutional Investor), APRI (AFL-CIO), Opal and numerous others. He was Consultant to Progress Investment Mgmt when it was created. He has been a CIO including a start-up Emerging Fund of Hedge Funds which morphed into a “Film Fund” which later successfully invested in various films including the “Twilight” series.
For more than 30 years, Nunez’s experience has included institutional investment research and consulting services to investment managers, Plan Sponsors and professional investment firms. His efforts have included: Performing due diligence on investment firms and managers; conducting risk management, asset allocation studies, analyses and monitoring of funds; created custom research and risk management tools to better enhance manager performance and keep costs as low as possible; designed custom research system packages and proprietary models for managers and pension funds.
He has specialized in Emerging Manager programs and Trustee/Staff Education, championing both through the creation of various education programs and organizations. He has been: A Consultant to the Presidential Commission on Minority Business (under President George H. W. Bush), a delegate to the White House Conference for Small Businesses under President Bill Clinton, and an advisor to Governors, Mayors and City Councils on Pension Funds and Small Business and Economic Development.
Nuñez received his CFA in 1986; has taught courses in Business, Finance and Entrepreneurship as an Adjunct Professor at several universities; created the Curriculum and co-created the training program for the AFL-CIO’s oldest and largest constituency group, the A. Philip Randolph Institute (APRI). He participated in the creation of FPPTA’s Certification Program (the Florida Public Pension Trustee Association) where he developed the “Performance Measurement Educational Module”. OMNI has created and conducted numerous trustee education programs and workshops including OMNI’s Annual “Finding Alpha in the Delta Institutional Roundtable” and the “OMNI Buttonwood Investment Roundtable Series” events (hosted by and at the NYSE and Nasdaq multiple times) annually (New Orleans, Washington, DC, Chicago, New York City, Palm Beach), all focusing on DEI Initiatives, Emerging and WBE/MBE Managers and Service Providers.
Nuñez provides his expertise to others in the Industry as a member of the P&I Research Advisory panel and as a member of the Public Funds Advisory Board for IMN, (IMN was created by Frank Fabozzi and is now owned by Institutional Investor). Nunez is a Co-Founder of BLACK AND CRIMSON PASSPORT TO BOARDS and the OMNI WALL ST ADVANTAGE Mentoring and Internship Program. He is an Advisor to the Actuarial Studies program and a Student Investment Program at two universities.
Nuñez received his MBA from Harvard Business School where he was recipient of the Uehlmann Award for his research on “The Use of the Futures Market for Institutional Investors to Hedge Risks”. He also holds BA from Harvard College in Sociology with emphasis on Statistics. He is an alumnus of St. Paul’s School of Concord, NH and a proud alumnus of the public school system of New York City. He is an avid amateur astronomer and saxophone player.
