Shipping Industry Launches the Blue Sky Maritime Coalition to Address Climate Change

Leaders in the global shipping industry have launched the Blue Sky Maritime Coalition to accelerate the transition of shipping industry toward net-zero GHG emissions and address global climate change. Purus Marine, established by IEN member EnTrust Global, is one of the founding members of the coalition.

The Blue Sky Maritime Coalition is a not-for-profit organization comprising senior leaders from across the entire maritime value chain, including ship owner/operators, charterers, financial institutions, investors as well as government regulators, NGOs, academic and research institutions.

The Coalition is focused on accelerating the transition of waterborne transportation in Canada and the United States toward net-zero GHG emissions, by jointly developing and executing a roadmap to a commercially viable net-zero emission logistics value chain. The roadmap focused workstreams include:

  • Measurement and Operational efficiencies
  • Finance, commercial and Chartering
  • Policy Regulatory and Incentives
  • Technology, infrastructure and Fuels

Through these focused work streams the Coalition will facilitate collaboration among industry stakeholders regionally and globally thereby enabling the creation of technical pathways and projects that will deliver significant near-term reductions in GHG emissions and lead to commercially viable net-zero emissions.

As more endowments and other investors make net zero portfolio commitments, the underlying companies in their portfolios will need to be on pathways to reduce GHG emissions inline with the goals of the Paris Agreement to keep global warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius.  For many companies, the emissions embedded in their supply chains tie back to the shipping industry.  This Coalition is an important step in helping all companies, and all investors, accelerate the transition to a low carbon economy.
