Impact investing, through individual portfolios, university endowments, foundation mission investments, and more are fundamental sources for this work."

    Aligned Climate Capital

    Aligned Climate Capital

Over the next two decades, we must invest nearly $50 trillion globally to prevent the worst effects of climate change.[1]  Aligned believes this is a unique opportunity to generate strong financial returns while also achieving meaningful environmental and social impact.

For more than a decade, Aligned’s senior management has been at the forefront of using financial tools to address climate change. Before founding Aligned Climate Capital, CEO Peter Davidson and COO Brendan Bell were appointed by President Obama to manage the U.S. Department of Energy Loan Programs Office (LPO) and its $32 billion portfolio of innovative clean energy investments.  The projects they oversaw included some of the most catalytic public investments in clean energy at the time, including many of the first utility-scale solar, wind, and energy storage projects in the United States, as well as a loan to Tesla Motors.

After leaving government service, Davidson and Bell joined with current Aligned Climate Capital General Counsel Lawrence Rodman to manage Aligned Intermediary, an investment advisor focused on accelerating the flow of institutional capital into climate infrastructure. This platform advised twelve institutional investors including TIAA Global Asset Management, Church Commissioners for England, the New Zealand Superannuation Fund, and the University of California Regents on direct investments in this sector.  The Hewlett Foundation, the Macarthur Foundation, ClimateWorks, and other philanthropies were instrumental in launching Aligned Intermediary and supporting its early operations.

In 2019, the leadership team saw the need for an asset manager focused exclusively on climate-related investments across different asset classes. With the support of its institutional advisory clients, the team ended Aligned Intermediary and its advisory work and launched Aligned Climate Capital.

Today, Aligned has over $1.8 billion of assets under management (as of 12/31/21) across three investment strategies: Aligned Climate Fund (venture capital), Aligned Solar Partners (tax-advantaged distributed solar), and Ares Climate Infrastructure Partners (a joint venture with Ares Infrastructure and Power Group). Based out of offices in Los Angeles and New York City, our team of thirteen professionals draws from prior experience in finance, renewable energy development, and electric utilities. Aligned’s investment strategies continue our long-term mission of mobilizing private capital to solve climate change, guided by a vision that the success of our firm, our investors, our partners, and the planet we share are all Aligned.

McGill University is a public university, founded in 1821, and is one of Canada’s best-known institutions of higher learning and one of the leading universities in the world. McGill has a student body of over 39,000 students across 11 faculties. McGill’s endowment, managed through the McGill Investment Pool (MIP), is managed by McGill’s Office of Investments under the direction of the Investment Committee. The Committee to Advise on Matters of Social Responsibility advises the Board on matters concerning social responsibility related to University endowment investments within the mandate of the Investment Committee.

In 2020, McGill’s Board of Governors approved an ambitious action plan to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of its endowment investments. Among other commitments, McGill committed to reduce the carbon footprint of the MIP public equity portfolio by 33 percent relative to the MIP public equities benchmark by 2025, increase its impact investing by committing 5% to low-carbon funds by 2025, continue to increase the number of University fund managers who adhere to an environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) policy and/or are signatories of the United Nations’ Principles for Responsible Investment (UNPRI), further its leadership role in the area of socially responsible investment and amend its Statement of Investment Policy to consider ESG commitments.

In 2020, McGill, along with other Canadian universities, signed Investing to Address Climate Change: A Charter for Canadian Universities. Signatories of the charter pledge to adopt a responsible investing framework, regularly calculate the carbon footprint of their investment portfolio, publicly share progress and results in achieving sustainability goals, and evaluate fund managers based on their compliance with the guidelines set forth in the charter.

McGill recognizes and embraces the unique responsibility of universities to support societies in their transition toward sustainability, by generating the knowledge needed to create a more sustainable future, as well as cultivating citizens and leaders who have the skills and commitment to put that knowledge into practice. Adopting a more carbon-conscious investment approach complements McGill’s far-reaching climate change and sustainability goals, including institution-wide efforts to achieve carbon neutrality across the University’s operations by 2040.

And we are nowhere near done. Our relentless implementation of a visionary strategic plan will see us expand to an enrollment of more than 14,000 by 2023, add important facilities like the $90 million Engineering Research and Innovation Center due to open in 2021 and a new 450-bed residence hall and grow our research program through expansion of strategic partnerships with a broad range of federal agencies and private concerns.
